Roland, the Humble Acolyte

Background: Roland was born to a family of modest farmers in a quiet village on the edge of the Marth Forest. Life was simple but hard, centered around the land and the changing seasons. Roland had always possessed a natural connection to nature, with a talent for coaxing life from even the most stubborn soil. He enjoyed the meditative rhythm of planting and tending crops, but his compassionate nature often drew him to help neighbors in need, offering food, comfort, or a helping hand.

The Turning Point:
One fateful summer, a blight swept through the village, destroying crops and leaving many families destitute. Among those affected were Roland's parents, who succumbed to illness during the harsh winter that followed. Seeking solace, Roland turned to the village temple—a humble shrine devoted to a god of healing and growth. The temple priests offered him shelter, and in return, Roland used his farming expertise to revive the temple gardens, which had fallen into neglect.

As the gardens flourished, so did Roland's bond with the clergy. He became deeply curious about the teachings of the temple, finding comfort in its tenets of healing, balance, and nurturing life. He discovered a latent talent for brewing potions, using the herbs he grew to create remedies for the sick and injured. Recognizing his potential, the high priest took him under his wing, teaching him the ways of divine magic.

His Role Today:
Years have passed, and Roland has become a respected member of the temple. Though his official title is that of an adept priest, he still considers himself the temple gardener, tending to the herbs and plants with the same care he once gave his family’s fields. His potions are sought after for their potency, and his healing prayers have saved many lives. However, Roland remains humble, preferring to let others take the credit for his work.

Personality:
Roland is gentle and soft-spoken, with a calming presence that puts others at ease. He believes in the sanctity of life and is reluctant to take up arms, though he understands the need for protection in dire circumstances. His sense of humor is earthy and dry, often revolving around plants or farming metaphors.

Appearance:
Roland has the weathered hands of a farmer, rough and calloused from years of toil. His brown eyes carry a quiet warmth, and his auburn hair is streaked with gray. He wears simple robes of earthy greens and browns, often smudged with dirt from his gardening. Around his neck, he wears a talisman of the temple’s deity, carved from wood he shaped himself.

Secret:
Though Roland is devoted to the temple, he harbors a lingering guilt from his past. During the blight that claimed his parents, he was approached by a traveling alchemist who offered him a cure for the crops—for a steep price. Desperate, Roland sold a family heirloom, only to discover later that the cure was a scam. The crops died anyway, and his parents perished shortly after. He blames himself for being gullible and is determined to atone by dedicating his life to healing and helping others.

In the Campaign:
Roland can be an invaluable ally to the party, providing potions, healing, and guidance. His extensive knowledge of plants and herbs can also prove useful in wilderness adventures. However, his reluctance to fight and his deep empathy can sometimes lead to tension with more aggressive party members. If the party earns his trust, Roland might share his past, revealing a vulnerability that makes him all the more human.
